TWO people died in crashes on North Yorkshire’s roads at the weekend.

A pedestrian was struck by a white and blue DAF lorry on the A64 at Sherburn, between Malton and Scarborough, at about 7.45pm on Friday, said a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police.

A 39-year-old female motorcycle pillion passenger from Rotherham died after receiving severe injuries on York’s outer ring road, between the A59 and Wetherby Road, at about 11.15am yesterday.

The victim of the A64 crash, a 25-year-old local man, was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary with serious injuries, but he died on Saturday morning.

Police closed the road in both directions for about four hours to investigate the circumstances of the collision, and have not yet released the identity of the man, although his family have been informed. The police spokesman said the HGV driver stopped at the scene, and had not been arrested.

Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw anyone walking along the side of the carriageway before the incident to get in touch with information.

A police spokeswoman said the outer ring road was closed in both directions after the motorbike crash for several hours, while investigations took place, causing heavy queues for motorists attempting to get from or to Rufforth and Knapton.

The male rider of the bike, also from Rotherham, suffered a suspected broken collar bone, said the spokeswoman.

Three cars also crashed on the A64 at Huttons Ambo at about 1.30pm yesterday, leaving one person trapped, but the police said nobody was thought to be seriously hurt.

Anyone with information about any of the accidents, or who saw them, should phone North Yorkshire Police on 101.
