THE scent of summer was in the air as shoppers in York picked up free flowers.
Teams from National Trust gardens across Yorkshire handed out roses, larkspur and rosemary to surprised shoppers, local residents and tourists in the city centre yesterday (Thurs).
The floral gifts symbolised one of the eight Trust gardens in the region and hopefully inspired the recipients to discover more this summer.
Des Cotton, gardener, at Beningbrough Hall, said: “Yorkshire has an abundance of special places, often on your doorstep yet you might not realise what’s on offer behind a gate or wall.
"Each garden has its own story and they are perfect to take a moment and watch the insects at work or pick up tips for your own patch of green.”
National Trust gardens include those at York's Treasurer’s House and a water garden with World Heritage Site status at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Ripon.
