THE York Minster Piazza and Orb, an extension to Knavesmire Primary School, the landscaping of the Derwenthorpe development, and the new Star Inn the City, next to Museum Gardens, all have one thing in common. They are among 24 new or refurbished buildings or public space projects that are in the running for prestigious York Design Awards.

The awards aim to celebrate the very best of new building design in York, as well as in conservation and public space projects.

The winners will be announced at a glitzy awards ceremony at the Nestlé Product Technology Centre on Monday (June 23).

Most category winners will be chosen by a panel of judges. But there is one award that you can vote for: The Press People’s Award.

You have until 12 noon on Friday to cast your vote for the building or project you like most - all but one of the 24 schemes have entered for the People’s Award.

You can see all the entries, and vote electronically, on our website (see details below).

But if you’ve been having trouble making up your mind, more details of all the entries will be on display at an exhibition at the University of York’s Ron Cooke Hub from 10am to 8pm tomorrow (Thursday) as part of the York Festival of Ideas.

Your vote matters, says Janet Hopton, chair of the York Design Awards committee.

“This is your opportunity to have your say on what you admire about architecture in York,” she said.

Each person has one vote. The deadline for voting is 12 noon on Friday. Votes received after this will not be counted.

The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on Monday.
