TWO women are in hospital and a man has been arrested after a crash in the centre of York last night.

The women were hit by a car on Lendal Bridge just before 10pm last night and both police and the ambulance service were called to the scene.

Both women were taken to hospital and one has serious injuries, police said.

The 27 year old male driver of the car - a silver Vauxhall Corsa - was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The road stayed closed for recovery and investigations and police asked members of the public to avoid the area, until it was reopened at about 11.15pm.

Inspector John Norton of North Yorkshire Police's Force Control Room has appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw a car matching that description in the area, to contact the police.

Witnesses should call 101 and quote log number 532 of June 14.
