ONE of the busiest roads into and out of York city-centre is to close for five days.

Leeman Road will be closed around its tunnel from Monday.

City of York Council engineers are working on cracked and broken concrete road surfaces, which they say are posing a danger to the travelling public and urgently need repairs.

The tunnel and road will be closed from 9am on Monday until around 6pm on Friday, June 20.

While the road is closed, engineers will also carry out maintenance on lighting and give the walkway a deep clean.

First York’s Number 5/5A buses and the Number 2 Rawcliffe Bar Park&Ride Green Line will both be diverted because of the closure.

The council revealed this afternoon it would be working in partnership with First to provide a free, hourly, shuttle bus during the works.

It said the bus would stop at Salisbury Terrace, Kingsland Terrace, Garfield Terrace, Livingston St, Salisbury Road, Water End, Poppleton Road (primary School) and York Station.

The timetable of the shuttle would be, from Monday to Friday:
Station Road . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0847 0947 1047 1147 1247 1347 1447 1547 1647 1757
Salisbury Road . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0907 1007 1107 1207 1307 1407 1507 1607 1707 1817

Neil Ferris, council assistant director of city and environmental services, said: “The road surface on this section of Leeman Road, under the Marble Arch Bridge, is heavily cracked and damaged and in need of urgent repair and poses a risk to the travelling public.

“All residents and businesses in the vicinity have been notified of the works in advance, and we will carry these out as quickly as possible and do everything to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.”
