Scouts have been helping residents enjoy the Good Life by putting the finishing touches to a garden which is putting food on the table for a whole village.

The young helpers got stuck in as part of the national "Do 1 Thing for Your Community" scheme after residents spent two years creating the Sprouts Community Garden in Copmanthorpe.

Copmanthorpe Scouts, Cubs and Beavers painted new fencing, planted vegetables and unveiled a new sign welcoming residents to the plots.

Families have been meeting every month to learn how to grow their own and share the mouth-watering results.

The garden has also become the hub for a new annual initiative which sees residents from across the village swapping their own surplus produce.

The scheme has been supported by the whole community including Copmanthorpe Parish Council, Copmanthorpe Youth Club, and York Ainsty Rotary.

Parish Councillor Jean Auton said: “We are delighted that the scouts have helped to finalise our plans for a new community resource outside the Youth Club.

"We are delighted with the results and the smart new sign which the scouts have created.”

Rebecca Craven, from Sprouts, added: “It has been fantastic to see so many people getting involved in the new garden.

"We’re so pleased the scouts and Rotary have put the final bits in place so Copmanthorpe will have a garden where everyone can learn, have fun and spend time together.”
