VISITORS to York’s Mansion House have been given a chance to have their say on its proposed restoration.

The ‘Opening Doors’ project aims to improve the display of the gold and silver collection, reduce the carbon footprint of the building and restore the 18th century kitchens.

At the weekend residents and visitors were invited to contribute to the developing proposals and to speak to the architects who were on hand to discuss proposed designs.

De Matos Ryan has been appointed as architects for the project, after City of York Council received development funding of £76,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The plans will be sent to the HLF in November with a decision on a full grant expected in early 2015.

Cllr Tracey Simpson-Laing, Deputy Leader of City of York Council said: “This project looks to help us move further towards the most comprehensive restoration of the Mansion House since its completion in 1732 and it will be interesting to hear the views of visitors about the potential improvements.”

Throughout the weekend, family friendly activities were held cooking demonstrations with original recipes available, as well as seal and hat-making activities based on the ceremonial and historical traditions in the Mansion House.

Visitors will also had the chance to see the Grand Départ trophy, ahead of stage two of the Tour de France on Sunday 6 July.
