A frail pensioner died after she fell out of her chair and was injured by a piano, an inquest has heard.

Retired newsagent Audrey Widdop had moved in with her daughter Jayne Grainger who gave her mother around the clock care for a number of conditions, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Tragedy struck when the 82-year-old retired great grandmother was sitting in her mobility chair while her daughter was busy in the kitchen, the hearing at News Earswick Folk Hall was told.

Mrs Grainger said in a statement: "I heard mum shout out and a crash. She had fallen against the piano."

A GP was called out and prescribed pain killers. But when Mrs Widdop woke up the following morning she was in pain and an ambulance was called.

A hospital check up revealed she had broken some ribs and she died in hospital on April 18 this year, four days after the fall, from medical problems linked to her injuries.

York Coroner Donald Coverdale concluded the death was an accident because it had been triggered by the fall.
