AN actor from York returned to his roots last night when he took part in an outdoor play at a city allotments.

John Holt-Roberts, who was born and brought up in York, was back on home turf as the newest member of travelling theatre troupe Mikron, who were performing their new play ‘Till the Cows Come Home’ at Scarcroft Allotments in South Bank.

The plot follows a disenchanted council worker who decides to live his dream and source the ingredients for the world’s finest ice-cream, travelling the globe in the process. It aims to explore modern food production and consumer awareness.

The play is being hosted at unusual sites such as beer gardens, village greens and allotments throughout the summer.

For the Scarcroft show, the only performance in York, people were advised to “dress appropriately for a British summer evening. We recommend sunscreen and sunglasses, waterproofs, wellies and blankets!” Shelter was available in case of rain.

John, who joined Mikron this year, discovered his love of acting while at Joseph Rowntree School in New Earswick.

He said: “I am looking forward to the opportunity of taking really high quality theatre to non-conventional spaces. Hopefully we can make any first timers think differently about theatre.”

The company’s producer, Pete Toon, is also a Joseph Rowntree alumni.
