YORK St John University is climbing the league tables, according to the Guardian university guide 2015 shows.
In the latest rankings St John came 89th out of 160, up from 94th place last year, while the University of York remained static in 16th place.
In individual subjects, York St John came top for Design and the University of York gained or held ground in three of its top subjects, including Social Policy, which rose from 7th to 4th.
Both universities scored highly for teaching satisfaction, with 88.8 per cent of students happy at York and 89 per cent at York St John.
Prof David Fleming, vice chancellor of York St John, said: “I am delighted that our teaching is recognised as among the best in the sector with our Design department ranked first in the UK.
“I am confident the University and our students will continue to go from strength to strength.”
A spokesperson for the University of York said: “League tables have always been volatile. York's performance in the recent I-Grad survey is both encouraging and perhaps a more accurate measure of the University’s continuing quality. This placed York well above average in all categories.”
