THE wheels of history turned full circle when one of the Rolls Royces that starred in Brideshead Revisited returned to visit Castle Howard, more than 30 years after the original Granada production was filmed there.
The car, which dates from the 1920s, was accompanied at the stately home by about 30 other Rolls Royces and Bentleys as part of a one-off visit by the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts’ Club. Named Lady Deborah Jane, the famous Rolls was originally sold to a Miss Mackenzie of Bournemouth in 1929 for £1,698, 6s, 6d. Nothing further is known about it, until it was discovered in pieces in a Darlington lock-up garage in the early 1970s. The car was then restored to a near-original state over a number of years by Jack Brown, who found it, and his son Tony, who owns it now.
It became part of the family and was named after Jack’s oldest granddaughter.
As well as Brideshead Revisited, Lady Deborah Jane has appeared in the film version of All Creatures Great And Small and the TV comedy A Bit Of A Do. It has recently returned from a tour of the Zeeland region in the Netherlands.
