A retired head teacher has celebrated his 100th birthday in the same year his old reached its 140th anniversary year.

Stanley Mings was guest of honour at the celebrations by Heworth CE School earlier this year.

On Saturday, more than 60 friends and family toasted his 100th at The Cottage Inn at Haxby.

He actually reached the milestone on Friday which he spent with members of his large family.

Mr Mings, of Haxby, has a son and a daughter, six grand children, and six great grandchildren.

He received congratulations from the Queen and Iain Duncan Smith, the Secretary of State for Pensions.

He met his wife Eileen when they were both teaching at different primary schools in Acomb but was widowed eight years ago.

A keen bowls player, he worshipped at St Mary’s Church but now takes communion at home. He was a York voluntary guide and involved in Haxby Probus Club.

Daughter Pam Smith said: “He does not drink, gave up smoking years ago and had a very happy marriage.

“He is a very loving, caring, generous person with a lot of friends.”
