PLANS have been submitted to Selby District Council that could see two of the town's pubs converted to other uses.

Both The Queen Lizzie sports bar and the Golden Lion on Millgate are subject of "change of use" planning applications put to the council.

The schemes would see Golden Lion converted into a five bedroom home, while the Queen Lizzie could become a gym and cafe.

The Golden Lion is a Grade II listed building but a heritage statement submitted with the application says the works proposed would be of "low significance" to the historic building.

The statement said: "The changes will therefore not detract from the historic fabric and the architectural interest of the listing. The viability of a public house no longer exists and the building has already been altered from its original layout to be of historical importance."

The pub, which closed several years ago, is no longer a viable business, the planning application says.

The plans for the Queen Lizzie include the part demolition of a flat roofed extension toilet block and internal alterations, and a heritage statement with the application says the work will "add to the character of Selby" while giving the building a viable future as a commercial property. Proposed layout plans show a cafe kitchen area on the ground floor and gym on the first floor.
