A TRIP to the cinema led to 60 years of wedded bliss for William and Shirley Brown.

The couple, from Huntington, who have two children, three grandchildren and a great- granddaughter, celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary today.

William, now 80, was working as an apprentice bricklayer when he bought a ticket for the Clifton Picture House.

Shirley, now 78, was sitting at the other end of the row but they soon got together.

He popped the question when she was 17 and they had only been married a year when he was called up to do his National Service in North Africa.

For much of their married life, Shirley worked in Rowntree’s and local supermarkets, while Bill was in the building trade.

The couple, of Mulberry Court, Strensall Road, celebrated their Golden Wedding with a stretch limo ride around the sights of York.

To mark the latest milestone they are planning a family meal.

Shirley reckoned the secret of a ‎good marriage is “give and take” adding: “We have led a happy life.”
