RUNNERS from North Yorkshire have been urged to take part in this year’s Great North Run in costume for charity.

The British Red Cross is looking for volunteers to take part in the half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields on Sunday, September 7 and can offer guaranteed charity places for those willing to dress up.

Max Newton, senior community fundraiser for the Red Cross in Yorkshire, said: “Taking on an event like the Great North Run is brilliant anyway, but if you do it in fancy dress it is so much more fun. You feel like a hero as the crowd roars that much louder as you run by (or waddle by, depending on costume), and your fellow runners shout encouragement too.”

Red Cross runners are asked to raise sponsorship of £300 for the charity in return for a Great North Run place, and there is a £49 registration fee. Fancy dress is not provided.
