A GROUP of young dancers from York set out on a swimming challenge in an effort to raise money for their upcoming trip to the World Street Dance Championship competition.

Two of York Dance Factory's street dance groups went to qualifiers in Sheffield last October and won a place at the United Dance Organisation (UDO) World Championships at the SECC in Glasgow in August.

With 43 children involved, the dancers need to raise £5000 to fund their entrance to the events, their transport and accommodation during their trip to Scotland.

A sponsored swim at Archbishop Holgate's school saw the dancers cover 800 lengths between them in just one hour, and they have now raised £1,500 and have more events and fundraising planned.

The groups practice at Poppleton Ousebank School and York Railway Institute, and are stepping up their rehearsal schedules in the last few months preparing for the competition.

The dance school celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and teacher Melanie Fox said: "I am delighted to have so many committed young people who really inspire those around them with their skill and energy."

Now the 43 dancers are getting ready to compete against teams from around the world, and take part in workshops with some of the world’s best street dancers from Japan and America.

The dancers, aged between seven and 14 years old, will show off their skills in street dance styles including locking, hip hop, breakdance and energetic house.
