THE new man at the helm of Ryedale District Council has made history by becoming the youngest ever chairman of a local authority.

Cllr Luke Ives who represents Norton West Ward has been elected to the post at the age of just 22, with his mum Louise Ives as his consort.

Cllr Ives' chosen charity for the year is Ryedale Special Families, which supports families of children with disabilities and special needs.

Cllr Ives said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be elected as Chairman of Ryedale District Council. At a time when younger people are disillusioned with politics, I hope my appointment shows that there is a place for everyone in local democracy. The theme for my tenure in office will be a year of youth.”

Cllr Ives has lived in Norton since birth and is a former pupil of Norton College. He works for a small local business in Malton and is due to complete a four-year advanced apprenticeship in Accountancy in August.

The chairman’s role is to chair meetings of full council, host a number of civic events, represent the district council at ceremonial occasions and is invited to attend a wide range of events and presentations.

Cllr Ives added: “I believe that with subtle changes I can bring a fresh and modern approach to the office, whilst being sympathetic to traditional values and customs.

“My chosen charity aims to provide information, support and advice to families of children and young adults who face additional challenges in life. I hope my year in office will provide additional funds and raise the charity’s profile in the Ryedale community.”

Past chairman Cllr Janet Frank said: “I have very much enjoyed my year as Chairman of Council and I wish Luke good luck in the post I hope he has a successful year."

The vice-chairman is Cllr Steve Arnold.
