A NEW exhibition at the National Railway Museum in York is to feature the work of photographers who have captured ‘behind the scenes’ images of railway industry and manufacturing.

Open for Business, a touring photographic exhibition which opens tomorrow in the museum’s purpose-built gallery, displays pictures by nine Magnum photographers, including 'stunning' shots by Mark Power, of Bombardier in Derby and Nissan in Sunderland.

The museum says they demonstrate that the UK’s transport industry is still thriving, showing the manufacture of carriages and their interiors in fascinating detail.

Mark Power said it was impossible for photography to reveal the physical conditions - or even the skill - of manual labour, and the clean, tidy and very modern production line at Bombardier was far removed from the dark, grimy atmosphere and epic scale suggested by archive images he had seen at the National Railway Museum.

"So, instead, I focused on tiny details, isolating them from their surroundings with harsh flash. During the project I became a little wiser about the intricacies of making trains or cars, but not very much.”

Ellen Tait, Interpretation Developer at the NRM, said: “This is an exciting exhibition to have worked on and we are looking forward to welcoming the public in to have a look at the work of these incredibly talented photographers."

The free exhibition runs at the NRM until September 16.
