PUBLIC sector workers who go the extra mile in their work are once again being celebrated in this year's Community Pride awards.

Public Sector Hero is one of 13 categories in the Community Pride awards, running for the 11th time this year, and is sponsored by City of York Council

The award goes to a public sector worker who goes that extra mile to help others, or uses his or her skills to help people others and improve their environment, and the judges want your nominations.

Sally Burns, the council's Director of Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed with the positive response to the events and activities set up to celebrate the Tour de France coming to York.

“The world’s single largest annual sporting event has inspired our communities to gear up to hosting street parties, arranging amazing pieces of theatre and artwork for all to enjoy. They’re growing plants, cycling extraordinary distances to raise money and inspiring everyone to enjoy the health and leisure benefits that cycling can bring.

“We want these awards to celebrate those public sector heroes who have dedicated huge amounts of energy and creativity to benefit our city. Please nominate yours!”

Last year Lord Mayor of York Cllr Julie Gunnell presented the award to waste management officer David Dalton, dubbed "Mr Superman" for his devotion to helping people and looking after customers.

David, who works in rapid response, was nominated by Clifton ward councillor Helen Douglas. She called him a tireless worker who goes out of his way to help.

Cllr Douglas added: “He is flexible, works with everyone, embraces payback workers, is obliging and goes out of his way to pick up dumped furniture as he passes by as well as the jobs he is sent by the council.”

David was nominated alongside devoted PCSO Kathryn Bean, council worker Anne Platt who has looks after the Lord Mayor and Civic Party, and school caretaker Warren Allen.

Now the judges want to hear about your public sector heroes, and are urging people to put forward those they know who deserve a moment in the spotlight for their inspirational hard work and dedication.

Nominees in the Community Pride awards, which are sponsored by Benenden Health, must live in the City of York Council area or make a contribution to the city.
