YORK is to stage one of its biggest jobs fairs ever in a bid to help the city's unemployed into work.

The event is the first of two job fairs planned for 2014 and will feature organisations looking to recruit or fill vacancies immediately, as well as those with future recruitment campaigns in mind.

One of the employers set to be in attendance is specialist insurer Hiscox, which is relocating to York, brining with it a total of 500 jobs.

Alan Millard, chief operating officer of Hiscox, added: “We’ve already recruited more than 50 local people and have been really impressed by their eagerness to learn and ability to deliver first class service.

"When recruiting, we look for those that possess a genuine passion for customer service, and have an affiliation to the Hiscox values which include honesty, courage and integrity.

"There will be more job opportunities locally as we grow – find out more by visiting us at the jobs fair.”

York Learning, the council’s adult education and employability team will also be on hand at the event to offer job seekers information and advice on where to look for work.

Opportunities will also be available for people to brush up their CV and interview skills, as well as retraining and improving skill levels and qualifications.

Councillor James Alexander, City of York Council’s Leader with portfolio for economic development, said: “We’re committed to working with key partners to maximise job opportunities for those looking for work in York, and are delighted Hiscox will be among the employers at the fair.

"Being one of the UK’s highest-performing cities in terms of the proportion of skilled workers, we’re keen that our workforce finds the opportunities it’s seeking.

"In addition, for those new to the job market or who are needing extra support, we’re offering assistance with CV writing, job search, interview preparation. Feedback shows that along with those important work preparation skills, learners move on from these courses with an increased sense of self confidence, which adds to the likelihood of a successful job application.”
