A NATURE reserve dubbed the "green heart of York" has celebrated its 10th anniversary this weekend.
St Nick's - or St Nicholas Fields - was built on the site of Tang Hall tip, and was created local nature reserve in 2004.
A day of celebrations took place on Saturday, with free activities through the afternoon including wildlife walk, craft demonstrations and competitions.
MP Hugh Bayley was at the event. He said: "St Nicks does an excellent job in promoting renewable energy, composting and recycling, and educating local people about the damaging effects of climate change. It has achieved a great deal to help make York more sustainable."
The reserve's Environment Centre, built with lottery funding and opened in 2000, and the nature reserve is home to kingfishers and water voles.
St Nick's Cheif Officer Thomas Waring said: "It is remarkable how fast nature can heal and spring back to life even from a pile of rubbish! St Nicks is here to allow people to explore and enjoy nature on their doorstep and get inspired to make a positive difference. We hope that many will join us in celebrating what we’ve achieved so far."
