One of York’s oldest residents celebrates her 100th birthday today – and is still living in her own home.

Gladys Thompson, of Stockton Lane, was born on May 10 1914 and met husband Leslie while they were both working at Rowntrees.

She spent all her life on the production line, as did her husband, who died five years ago.

Mrs Thompson has already celebrated her centenary twice this week. Today an open house is planned for family, friends and neighbours, and tomorrow a fourth party is planned at her church.

She has one son who died four years ago but her family has grown to four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild - who all live in Canada.

Gladys was born in Upper Poppleton and had 11 brothers and sisters. She still leads an independent life style with the help of her family and carers.

Klara Thompson, her daughter in law, said: “She is so excited. She really is.”

A card from the Queen is due to arrive during the course of this morning. She had one from the Palace when she and Leslie celebrated their 70th anniversary.
