BRUMMIE reggae stalwarts UB40 are to play York Barbican on Friday, October 24.

General tickets go on sale on Monday morning, preceeded by pre-sale from today via www.ub40.co.uk.

They will be on their second British tour of the year, having promoted their September 2013 album, Getting Over The Storm, in the spring after its Top 30 success and BBC Radio 2 Album of the Week status last autumn.

Looking forward to their October travels, UB40 singer Robin Campbell says: “Having suffered a few setbacks, including our drummer Jimmy Brown and percussionist Norman Hassan’s health issues, we're now firing on all cylinders and itching to get out on the road and play our fans all the hits and some tracks off the latest album."

Naming themselves after the unemployment benefit form, UB40 formed in Birmingham in 1978 and released their debut album, Signing Off , in August 1980.

They have since achieved more than 40 UK Top 40 hits and sold 100 million records, and among their best-known numbers are King, Food For Thought, The Earth Dies Screaming, One In Ten, Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe, Sing Our Own Song, Rat In Mi Kitchen, Breakfast In Bed, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight and Higher Ground.

UB40 last played a North Yorkshire stage in June 2006 at Dalby Forest, since when original lead singer Ali Campbell has left the long-running band to pursue a solo career. Brother Duncan Campbell took over Ali's role in 2008.

Tickets cost £28.50 on 0844 854 2757 or at yorkbarbican.co.uk, or you can buy in person from the Barbican box office, open Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm.
