THOUSANDS of Scouts, Guides, Brownies and Cubs took to the streets of York yesterday, to celebrate St George's Day.

Four bands and members of the scouting movement from all around York gathered at the Eye of York before parading through the city to York Minster, where a special service was held in honour of Baden Powell, with the theme of campfires, with a special couldren lit, and campfire blankets from each troupe on display.

Colin Flaxton is the assistant district commissioner and organiser of Sunday's parade, and has been involved in Scouting for more than 60 years, organising the parade for the last 15.

He said: "It's a very important day, and has been going on for years and years, and should do for years to come.

"I've really enjoyed scouting and seeing kids grow up and when you meet them later and see what they've achieved, work-wise and family-wise, it's very rewarding.

The St George's flag was carried by 24-year-old Alex Wise of 2nd Acomb Scouts, who was asked to lead the parade after being given the Meritorious Conduct Award.

Former Community Pride nominee Alex was on holiday in Blackpool in September 2012 after being diagnosed with diabetes when he saw a cyclist with a child's buggy attached get trapped under a tram and stayed with the pair to keep them calm until paramedics arrived.

He said: "I'm absolutely honoured. A bit nervous, being diabetic for the last two years I've taken part in this parade on walking sticks. I'm nervous but very excited and honoured."
