THREE York shops have been praised for their efforts in making customers feel valued and going “above and beyond” when it comes to customer care.

Boots in Clifton, Boyes and the One Stop Shop on Walmgate have all been nominated for The Press's Community Pride Service with a Smile Award, which is open to businesses that demonstrate outstanding customer care, or charities that help York residents.

Clifton man Alan King nominated his local Boots chemist, saying that it was a pleasure to be treated so well. He praised the staff's professionalism and attentiveness to their customers saying they routinely go above and beyond the call of duty.

Another shop recognised for its duty of care to customers was the One Stop Shop on Walmgate which was nominated by Ken Butterfield. He said the shop had become a focal point for the community, bringing together both young and old from the area.

The One Stop Shop, which was shortlisted for the award last year, has organised free trips to Scarborough and Blackpool for older people, as well as a community Christmas party.

Staff at Boyes on Goodramgate - where the manager said they pride themselves on their customer service - have been put forward for the award by customer Barbara Pettitt.

Mrs Pettitt, from Walmgate, said staff in Boyes deserve their moment in the spotlight because of the care and attention they give and the way they help her continue to shop in their store despite her disabilities.

The Community Pride awards are sponsored by Benenden Health, and recognise individuals and groups who inspire others with their courage and selfless spirit, and The Press wants to receive your nominations for community heroes who deserve their moment in the spotlight.

As well as the Service with a Smile award, the awards include categories for Primary School Projects and Community projects and 10 categories for individuals including children and young people, parents, carers, volunteers, teachers, health workers and public sector staff, sports stars and charity fundraisers.

Nominees must live in the City of York Council area or make a contribution to life in the city. Three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October, when the winners will be revealed.
