A TEAM of fundraisers have donated more than £5,000 to York Hospital's Special Care Baby Unit.

Jo Starkey and her friends took part in a sponsored walk and took a tour of the unit while presenting the cheque, which was raised through an unusual sponsored walk.

More than 60 other people took to the streets of York dressed up and grandmas and granddads, in wigs, make-up and reading glasses, to walk a ten mile route stopping at a pub to mark each mile.

Jo said: "The walk was a huge success, we raised £1,000 just on the day in donations from passers by."

Among the group raising money for York Hospital's SCBU were Stacy Payne, whose son Thomas was born 12 weeks early and weighed just 2lb 13oz, spending seven weeks at the unit.

Stacy said: "I cannot say in words how thankful I am to all staff at York SCBU, they truly are angels without wings. I can never repay them for the love and care they gave to my son and my family."

The money raised on the walk will towards the £46,000 needed by the hospital to buy two new ventilators for the unit.
