A DRUNK man at risk of falling into the River Ouse last night was stopped by passersby and police.

The 41-year-old man was picked up by monitored cameras stumbling and repeatedly trying to stand-up just one metre from the edge of the river at King's Staith.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the scene at 11.45pm where passersby had stopped to help.

After they arrived the man, who was incapable of standing or speaking and was a metre from the river's edge, was taken to safety and on to York Hospital. He was not injured.

Police have thanked the people who stopped to help.

A police spokesperson said: "Our monitored cameras spotted a very drunk male trying to stand up and repeatedly falling over as he walked from Kings St onto Kings Staith. Due to the vulnerability being next to the river, and recent incidents, we were dispatched to attend.

"We located him where passers by had stopped to help."
