IT’S nearly 41 and a half miles as the road twists and turns, writes Steve Carroll. Now a York man is to end pub debate by finding out just how long it takes him to walk to Scarborough.

James Kilmartin plans to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support by taking on the trek to the seaside town on April 26.

He will set off from his Heworth Green home at 4am with the promise of fish and chips on the seafront late at night if he can finish in time.

Mr Kilmartin said Scarborough was a favourite place of his late grandfather, Joseph, and he wanted to take on the challenge to remember him while also raising charity cash at the same time.

“For some years after a pub debate on how long this walk would take, I've always wanted to try it,” he explained.

“This will be a very demanding challenge physically and mentally for someone as unfit as myself. Although I am hoping this will kick start me into a generally healthier lifestyle.

“I have just got my first pair of running shoes in more than ten years in order to do some preparation for the walk. This will not be easy and will no doubt be outside my comfort zone. But I am confident of getting there.”
