A YORK man has appeared in court accused of killing a pensioner in the city on New Year's Day.

Peter Anthony John Harris, 33, is charged with the manslaughter of Elsie Mowbray, 87. He is also accused of attempting to rob her on January 1 at her home in Victoria Court off Leeman Road, York.

Mrs Mowbray was taken to York Hospital with a head injury on New Year's Day. She was discharged but later readmitted and died on January 8.

Harris, of no fixed address, pleaded not guilty at Leeds Crown Court before the Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC, to both charges. He also denied charges of robbing two people at a house in Swann Street, York, of cash on New Year's Eve, and of robbing two more people at a house in Turpin Street of cash and a watch on New Year's Day.

After making court orders about the preparation of evidence, the judge told Harris: "It looks as if everything is now in line for your trial. It will be a trial for manslaughter and robbery. It will take place on June 23 and you will be remanded in custody until then."
