Anger over changes to pool opening hours at York health club

MEMBERS of a York health and fitness club have hit out after discovering its outdoor pool will close during the day during April.

David Lloyd York's pool will open for only eight hours daily this month, with it shutting between 10.30am and 4 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at 4pm on Wednesdays, and at 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Members Al Swales and Cathy Smurthwaite both contacted The Press to complain about the changes. Mr Swales said he had renewed his membership in February, expecting to be able to continue using it during the daytime as he had for the past 11 years as a member. "Members are up in arms about this," he claimed.

A spokeswoman for David Lloyd Leisure said she was sorry to learn some members were unhappy with the timetable change.

She said the company had undertaken a comprehensive review of all its pools, taking into account several factors such as club size, member count and usage, to determine current patterns and to 'see where we were able to achieve environmental objectives as part of our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint with minimal impact on members.'

She said the pool opening would increase to 12 hours a day in May and claimed the company went to great lengths to ensure members were fully aware of terms and conditions, including those around seasonal facilities such as outdoor pools. "Alternatively, members have access all day to the club’s indoor pool."

People have seriously contacted the local paper because they changed the opening times of one of the pools available to use at a massively over priced health club?

Really?

Could this by any chance be the same Cathy Smurthwaite who is a fascist and a racist potential councillor who cheated her way on to Osbaldwick Parish Council by not revealing she was a member of the BNP? If so, well done The Press for giving publicity to bigots.

I popped into my local pub the other day only to find they'd run out of my favourite beer.

I had a pint of another beer, then went to another pub.

And now I'm cursing myself for not doing a press release.

Its a serious issue to club members who pay out £700 per year only to find their pool is now classified as carbon generating and promised facilities are not being provided.

I think you are missing the point. Its not that its not important to those gym members, its the fact that this is not "breaking news".The majority of people are just not interested in trivial news, which I am sorry,to most of us,that what it is.

The club is making a number of changes which may drive customers/members away, which would be an odd thing to do considering the alternatives available. However if a change is made and enough people cancel their £700 per year memberships and vote with their feet, the message will get through. I’d also agree that this is hardly news worthy so no need to go squealing to the Press.

Judge her by her actions not her ideals.

If you sign up and pay for something (regardless of the cost of it) wouldn't you feel cheated if they changed the terms during your contracted period? What if some people signed up for the outdoor pool alone?
