EXPERTS across a range of fields will be staging a new series of lectures in York over the coming months.
The Mint Yard lectures – named after the old yard over which the current York Explore centre was built – are part of City of York Council’s Inspire programme, and they begin on April 10 at Haxby Explore Library with an insight into new excavations at the Star Carr mesolithic site, which are shedding new light on some of the Britain’s early settlers.
Historical archaeologist Dr Jayne Rimmer will discuss how York Archaeological Trust and the local community recreated the history of the Hungate area in the 19th and 20th centuries, at Dunnington Reading Rooms on May 8.
The National Railway Museum’s associate archivist Alison Kay will explore the experiences of people who travelled on ambulance trains during the First World War at Acomb Explore on June 4.
The final lecture is on June 25, at the Rowntree Park Reading Cafe, by Jim McGurn, chief executive of Get Cycling, and focuses on the history of the bicycle just weeks before the Tour de France comes to York.
