A £310,000 new look for a York street, including widening pavements and cutting space for cars, will be discussed next week.

City of York Council officials have revealed plans to make Fossgate more “pedestrian-friendly” and popular, with the favoured scheme seeing the road resurfaced, some parking spaces moved and new seats installed.

The road would be raised to the level of existing footpaths between its junction with Pavement and the area outside Mason’s Bar and Bistro.

Unique wide granite kerbs would be kept, as will stone setts and paving on Fossgate’s bridge.

The plans are part of the council’s Reinvigorate York scheme.

In a consultation on proposals for Fossgate, Exhibition Square and Duncombe Place/ Blake Street, which drew 600 responses, 56 per cent said Fossgate should be a daytime footstreet and 52 per cent agreed with the choice of paving materials.

However the opinion of respondents was split over junction improvements.

The council’s cabinet will be asked to approve the scheme next week, with officials saying it should concentrate on attracting people from the city-centre into Fossgate.

Councillor Dave Merrett, cabinet member for transport and planning, said the street was popular but that it had parking and speeding issues and was seen as “being set apart.”

“The vision is to make the pedestrian experience more attractive, improve the link from Fossgate to the citycentre shopping and footstreet area and encourage increased footfall,” he said.
