CAMPAIGNERS are arranging a “blindwalk” to show the challenges blind and partially sighted people face trying to get around York.

The RNIB and York Blind and Partially Sighted, Society (YBPSS) have arranged the demonstration on Friday, March 28 at 1.30pm from the YBPSS base on Rougier Street.

Taking part will be Coun Helen Douglas, who is a Guide Dog puppy walker, and bar-owner Marc Allinson, who runs the Artful Dodger on Micklegate and Mended Drum in Huby and uses street furniture to promote his businesses.

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get an understanding of the needs of blind and partially-sighted pedestrians. A fair and balanced view of both parties is essential when deciding on any future rules and regulations.”

The RNIB’s Tracy Dearing said ensuring people with sight loss are confident in their surroundings is a major part of them staying independent and mobile, but obstacles like A-boards, tables and chairs can make that difficult.
