RESIDENTS in York are being asked to join a painting project to celebrate the Tour de France coming to the city.

The Road Through York project aims to create a giant painting to welcome the opening stages of the race coming to the city. A painting by local artist and art tutor Karen Winship featuring York landmarks will be enlarged and split into 320 panels painted by participants. The 320sqm montage will go on show on July 6 at Knavesmire when the Grand Depart comes to York.

Karen said: β€œIt’s a great opportunity for aspiring local artists to come together and be creative.”

Sonja Crisp, City of York Council cabinet member for culture, said the idea was a key component of the celebrations.

York Railway Institute is providing a room for painting and storage, Crown Decorating has donated 50 litres of paint, and Portakabin has provided recycled coated board.
