RESIDENTS of a village near York are urged to get involved in a major community event this summer.

The Strensall Carnival on June 21 will be Alice In Wonderland themed, with a parade from Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy featuring costumed children on floats, music from local army cadets, Guides and Scouts, ending with stalls and events on the village green.

Plans are already under way and residents are urged to get involved and share any skills that could be of use.

Lynette Nelson, who came up with the carnival idea, said: “This will be a great opportunity to show case what our village/community can do when we all work together.

“With a fantastic donation already from the Parish Council of £1,000 and covering our insurance, plans are now in motion to pull off this event. This will be the first carnival, and it is hoped this will become a yearly event.”

Carol McSheffrey, one of the organisers, said many people would be making bunting, and said: “It’s all about bringing people together with different skills.

“We seem to have lost out on that now, always buying online rather than looking around and seeing what is around us. We’re making people more aware of what’s in the village and what skills are around us.”
