A LORRY driver has appeared in court accused of causing a head-on collision near Selby that killed a 19-year-old car driver.

Stoyan Andonov Stoyanov was allegedly driving a Bulgarian-registered white Mercedes Actros on the wrong side of the A1246 immediately before the two vehicles collided.

Callum Wark, from the Leeds area, was driving a black Renault Clio, travelling away from Fairburn, at 2.45pm on Saturday, when he was killed in the crash.

Stoyanov, 56, from Plovdiv in Bulgaria, who does not have a UK address, was charged with causing Mr Wark’s death by dangerous driving and was sent in custody to York magistrates.

When he appeared his solicitor Craig Robertson did not apply for bail, and Stoyanov was remanded to prison to await his next court appearance.

Magistrates heard the charge could be tried only by a judge and jury and sent him to York Crown Court, where he will have a preliminary hearing on March 17.

The case was delayed for several hours before an interpreter could arrive.

Police assured court staff they had booked a Bulgarian-speaking interpreter for the hearing which was listed for 10am, but the agency responsible for providing one was unable to do so until the afternoon.

Both magistrates and Mr Robertson thanked the interpreter for travelling from Nottingham, saying it would have been a very difficult day for them without his help.

The collision occurred between Fairburn and the junction of the A63 with the A1246 near Selby Fork Hotel.

It blocked the road for several hours while police carried out initial investigations and removed the vehicles.
