HIGHWAYS bosses have explained why they have painted new parking bays alongside these double yellow lines in a York city centre street.

Jeweller and retail forum chairman Frank Wood said the bays and lines were painted after Goodramgate was resurfaced last week.

He said single yellow lines were initially painted before workmen returned and changed them to double yellows. He claimed the new bays could be very confusing, as disabled motorists were entitled to park anywhere on yellow lines.

Alistair Briggs, Traffic Network Manager at City of York Council, said double yellow lines inside marked bays were a well-established way of indicating to Blue Badge holders and delivery drivers that they could park in these areas without causing an obstruction in a narrow street.

“The lines have been there for a number of years, but faded and have now been repainted,” he added.
