A YORK couple who started going out after meeting on a bus are today celebrating their diamond wedding.

Betty Smith said she was returning home to Sutton-on-Derwent from a visit to a cinema in York when she got talking to a man called Gordon who was returning to East Cottingwith.

They got on well and met up again the next day, and tied the knot 60 years ago today in Sutton.

Betty, now 79, said they had three children, Adrian, Karen and Malcolm, and four grandchildren, Katie, Mark, Matthew and Jordan, and now also have one great-granddaughter, Betty.

Betty said she worked at a former shoe shop in High Ousegate, and later at St Peter’s School and the University of York, while Gordon, now 82, worked as a lorry driver and later as a decorator.

“We have had a really lovely marriage,” she said. “We have looked after each other.”
