Parents of teenagers offered extra support

York Press: Parents of teenagers offered extra support Parents of teenagers offered extra support

EXTRA support is to be be made available to parents of teenagers in York.

City of York Council’s parenting team is working with relationship experts Relate to run short courses over three evening, which will be run by trained counsellors to show how to improve communication and how to deal with arguments.

Liz Savage, parenting early intervention manager at the council, said: “We’ve had lots of requests this year from mums and dads asking for ideas to help get their teenagers to work with them, rather than against them, and for strategies to tackle some of the trickier things that come up with this age group, such as sex, relationships, drugs, social media etc.”

Coun Janet Looker, cabinet member for education, children and young people, said: “Everyone needs support in bringing up their children from time to time because every child is unique.”

The next Relate courses are on March 12, 19 and 26, between 6pm and 9pm.

They will be held at the Friends Meeting House in Friargate.

To book, phone Kathryn Ashworth on 01302 347 445 or email kathrynashworth@relatemid-yorkshire.org.uk

Relate also has a website with advice and help for parents of troubled teenagers and can access a live chat to talk with a counsellor about issues they maybe facing, also a parents forum to discuss difficulties with other parents. Please visit http://parentingtrou

I'm staggered that my council actually has a "parenting team" at the same time as not being able to make efficiency savings and struggling to maintain roads.

No need to worry about the potholes Pete, the council has a
"Road Safety Training Coordinator" who can help you learn to avoid them.
If that's getting your blood pressure too high, you could contact the
"Older Peoples Physical Activity Officer" or even the "Football facilities project officer" (not to be confused with the "Community Stadium Project Officer") and they can help you. (Mon - Thurs, 09:30 - 12:00, 14:00 - 15:30).

I can help the parents with this... your kids will have sex when they want, relationships are more of a fling at that age so not to worry. stop them from taking drugs.. they’re bad.. social media is good i'd prefer twitter to facebook nowadays though.

Surprise surprise - Parents have had 'problem' teenagers for thousands of years - why are taxpayers now having to pay to help them?

WHISTLEJACKET I thought you were joking with these jobs but I looked them up. You are correct and they write pages of meaningless consultation papers and are paid by us
What other ridiculous posts are there in York council? The mind boggles!!

I was a single parent from when my boys were aged 8 &10, their father was a selfish useless lump that couldn't even be trusted to send them a birthday card never mind impart any meaningful advice.

I trusted my instincts with how to handle them, our relationship changed over the years from mother and children to a deep friendship, we respect each other, and they have grown into two young men I am very proud to call my sons.

I am not saying that it was all plain sailing, we had our ups and downs, but nothing too serious, and we didn't need the intervention of an "expert" .

Incidentally, Relate were involved in the early stages of my marriage breakdown, they were not able to provide any advice that helped.
