EXTRA support is to be be made available to parents of teenagers in York.

City of York Council’s parenting team is working with relationship experts Relate to run short courses over three evening, which will be run by trained counsellors to show how to improve communication and how to deal with arguments.

Liz Savage, parenting early intervention manager at the council, said: “We’ve had lots of requests this year from mums and dads asking for ideas to help get their teenagers to work with them, rather than against them, and for strategies to tackle some of the trickier things that come up with this age group, such as sex, relationships, drugs, social media etc.”

Coun Janet Looker, cabinet member for education, children and young people, said: “Everyone needs support in bringing up their children from time to time because every child is unique.”

The next Relate courses are on March 12, 19 and 26, between 6pm and 9pm.

They will be held at the Friends Meeting House in Friargate.
