A number of journalists working for The Press staged a one-day strike yesterday in protest at plans to transfer some production work to Wales.
Newsquest, which owns The Press, is investing in a new editorial system which will make production of the paper significantly easier and will enable journalists to publish material in print, online and via mobile devices in a more efficient way.
Yesterday’s action was taken by members of the National Union of Journalists. Other journalists worked normally and production of the paper and its website was unaffected.
A Newsquest spokesman said: “The media industry is facing huge structural change and Newsquest York has responded by investing in a state-of-the-art editorial system.
“The company plans to transfer part of the sub-editing process to a production centre in Wales.
“Five individual members of staff are affected, four sub-editors and one graphic artist, and we fully appreciate that this is an anxious time for them.
“A commitment has already been given that there will be no compulsory redundancies and the consultation process is continuing.
“All key editorial decisions and judgments will continue to be made in York. News gathering by an unrivalled number of local reporters and photographers is completely unaffected.”
