A CANNABIS dealer who used his illegal trade to pay household bills has been given a community order.
Helen Wheatley, prosecuting, said police found more than £1,360 of the drug when they raided Daniel James Michael Welford’s Selby home.
They also found more than 50 text messages indicating he had been dealing in cannabis.
Welford, 20, of Coupland Road, Selby, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply it to a small group of friends.
His solicitor advocate Lee-Anne Robins-Hicks said he used the money he raised to fund his own cannabis habit and for “paying a small number of bills when in financial difficulties.”
He was given a community order with 12 months’ supervision and a rehabilitation programme at York Crown Court.
Judge Neil Davey QC told Welford that since his arrest in June 2013 “you have demonstrated your ability to steer away from any offending involving drugs.”
He had also managed to reduce his habit.
