VIKING swords and gold jewellery are being dusted off at the Yorkshire Museum in time for a week of Viking-themed fun at half- term.
The museum is planning free events for children and families throughout the half-term week, including drop-in sessions when children can hear about Viking beliefs, and Valhalla.
Emma Williams, assistant curator of science and archaeology said: “There is something about Vikings that always captures the imagination of children.
These special events, which have been planned around our fantastic Viking collection, are a great way for children to learn about the Vikings in a fun, interactive way.
“With the ‘Kids Go Free’ deal and the two attractions for £10, parents don’t have to worry about those mounting half-term costs either.”
On show will be some of the rare Viking artefacts the museum owns, including one of only two rare Viking swords ever to be found in York.
The museum’s collections facilitator will be showing off the sword which was excavated from the city’s own Coppergate site.
On show beside the sword will be a gold arm bracelet, one of the largest pieces of Viking gold ever to be found in the UK.
The Yorkshire Museum and York Castle Museum, which are free to York residents, have a Kids Go Free deal and adults can purchase a £10 ticket for admittance into both attractions.
