Knavesmire Primary School team to run York 10K in memory of headteacher Carol Weston

A HEADTEACHER is continuing to inspire children and staff at a York school – a year after she died from cancer.

Carol Weston continued to work at Knavesmire Primary School when she was fit enough during her six-month fight against cancer. She died in June 2011.

Now the school is sending a team of at least 40 runners of staff, parents and relatives called Weston’s Warriors to the York 10K race in August to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and a group of children will take part in the junior event at the same occasion. So far the team has raised £1,000.

Pupils will also take part in fundraising at the school later this term.

Former pupil Georgia Schofield, now aged 12, has written a poem in memory of the teacher who headed the school for nine years. Current pupils have made scarecrows of two of the team to encourage them in their fundraising.

One of Weston’s Warriors, staff member Lucy Goulden, said: “Carol was a very determined person. We wanted to do something to remember her and celebrate her life. This is why we decided to fundraise for Macmillan by running the York 10K. We know what a difference charities like Macmillan make to people when they need support.”

Roohi Lupton, Macmillan’s fundraising manager, said: “This really is an inspirational story of how one lady has touched the lives of many of her friends and colleagues.

“We can see how one cancer diagnosis affected more than just that one person. Macmillan aims to be the support for all those people who are affected by a cancer diagnosis, so while 2.2 million people are currently living in the UK with a cancer diagnosis, we have many more people we would like to be able to support.”
