THEY say in business the stakes are high, and no more so than for companies across York which are being invited to compete in one of the city’s biggest athletic events.
About 6,000 runners are expected to pound the city’s streets on Sunday, August 5, in the fourth Jane Tomlinson York 10K, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities in memory of the sporting and fundraising legend.
As part of the event, this year Run For All organisers have re-launched the York 10k Corporate Challenge.
The event – once again sponsored by Morrison Utility Services, whose team won last year – encourages businesses to enter a team in the 10k and raise money for charities close to their hearts.
Run For All events director Sara Birkinshaw is urging firms across York to sign up and make the 2012 event bigger and better than ever.
She said: “A healthy and fit workforce is more productive, less likely to be absent from work and the camaraderie of taking part in the challenge is second to none.
“I’d like to urge any business, large or small, to sign up for the York 10k Corporate Challenge today and start reaping those business benefits.” Jane Tomlinson died in September 2007 after losing her fight against cancer.
Despite her pain and illness, she participated in a number of high-profile endurance challenges and raised £1.85 million for charity before her death.
Dave Marcroft, area operations manager for Morrison, said: “We are proud to support the York 10k Corporate Challenge again this year.
“It is a fantastic event which helps build teams and makes the workplace a healthier place. We are calling on businesses to join us in taking up the challenge and raise much needed funds for many worthy causes.”
The York 10k Corporate Challenge is open to teams of ten or more and includes a business networking event with a difference, to be held the week before the race.
