Junior Jane Tomlinson’s Run is launched

A GIANT tortoise led the charge to launch the 2012 junior Jane Tomlinson’s Run in York.

Children from Huntington Secondary School were joined by Jane Tomlinson Appeal mascot Tommo the Tortoise to gear them up for the challenge.

The Jane Tomlinson’s 1.5K Run For All Mini Run for children aged three to eight and the 2.5K Junior Fun Run for children aged nine to 14, will take place on the the same day as the adult York 10K.

This year’s event on Knavesmire on Sunday, August 5, is now open for entries and will form Huntington School’s lower school challenge open to all students in Years 7 to 9.

Huntington pupil Emily Greener, 13, said: “I ran the junior run last year and it was great. Mum was looking for something for me to do in the summer holidays and I like running so I really enjoyed it. This year, I hope to get my sister to run it with me too.”

Joe Wilson, 12, said: “I was really pleased to come quite close to the front in last year’s run so want to go even faster this year. I ran with my sister who is ten and my dad ran with my five-year-old brother in the mini run. My mum did the adult 10K run. This year I want my friends to do it too.”

Nigel Currie, head of PE, said: “With running, there is no excuse not to give it a go and there is such a great sense of achievement once you have finished.”

Lisa Wayman, marketing executive at Arena Group, who sponsor the Junior and Mini Fun Run in York, said: “We work with over 700 schools in the UK so we are pleased to be able to encourage children in York to get more involved in sport and take part in such a worthy cause.”

As the event is free, Run For All asks children to attempt to raise £10 each for a charity or good cause of their choice.
