York 10K charity run to be relaunched in York today

A CHARITY run to mark the legacy of one of the world’s most famous sporting fundraisers was being relaunched in York today.

On August 1, up to 8,000 runners will take to the city’s streets for the second Jane Tomlinson York 10K to raise money for charity in memory of the sporting and fundraising legend.

Jane’s widower, Mike Tomlinson, was being joined by former Olympic athlete Steve Cram and BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration at the Mansion House in York today to officially launch the event.

Mike said: “Last year’s York 10K was a fantastic success.

“Places sold out in a matter of weeks and the atmosphere on race day was truly amazing.

“We were delighted that the event raised more than £150,000 for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and the event’s partner charities.

“We are hoping this year’s event will be even bigger and better and have applied to increase the race entry from 5,000 to 8,000 places.

“After last year’s success, I really would urge anyone thinking of taking part to sign up fast.”

BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration, who was among the runners at last year’s event, said: “I was so thrilled to be involved last year and witness such a fabulous event. So many people have already asked me to make sure the race happens again. It will – for many years to come.”

Once again, four charities – Martin House Hospice, Coco, Sparks and McMillan Cancer Support – have partnered with Jane’s Appeal for this year’s run.

Steve Cram, who founded children’s charity Coco, said: “I am delighted to support the York 10K again. Last year’s event was a fantastic success for Coco and all the partner charities.

“Jane was a friend and I am proud to be associated with the event and with keeping her fundraising legacy alive and look forward again to one of the most spectacular city 10Ks in the UK.”
