Jane Tomlinson’s York 10k run raises £250k for charities

AN inaugural charity run set up in York to mark the legacy of one of the world’s most famous sporting fundraisers has raised £250,000 for good causes.

More than 4,000 runners took to the city’s streets in August for a ten-kilometre race in memory of cancer patient Jane Tomlinson.

It was such a success organisers are hoping to increase the number of entries to 8,000.

Jane’s widower, Mike Tomlinson, said: “About £53,000 has been raised for Jane’s Appeal, and a further £126,000 has been raised for our partner charities Martin House Hospice, Coco, Sparks and McMillan Cancer Support.

“Including all the money people have raised for other charities aside from these, it is estimated about £250,000 has been raised through the first Run For All York 10K. This is absolutely fantastic news – especially considering we are in the middle of a recession.

“When we first set up the York 10k – you hope for a figure like this to be raised and it is amazing to reach this total.”

The event began and ended at Knavesmire and passed York landmarks including the Minster, the River Ouse and the former Terry’s factory.

Mike revealed plans to double the number of entrants in next year’s event were being examined.

“It would mean changing the course slightly – which cause slightly more disruption for the city – but it would mean the opportunity to raise even more money for charity,” he said.

“Of course, increasing the capacity would also mean we could meet the public demand of those wanting to take part. Last year we sold out places within a matter of weeks, and this year looks set to do the same.”

About 1,000 of those who registered their interest after the last race have already bought tickets for next year’s race and only half the places may be available when the 2010 10K is officially launched.
