Jane Tomlinson York 10k Run a big success

The first Jane Tomlinson York 10k Run has been hailed a huge success by organisers and the thousands of runners who took part in the event.

Thousands of people set of from Knavesmire yesterday morning in the inaugural event, set up in memory of the inspirational fundraiser who dedicated the final years of her life to raising money for charity while suffering from cancer.

Throngs of cheering crowds lined the course, which began and finished at Knavesmire and passed York landmarks including the Minster, the River Ouse and the former Terry’s factory.

Olympic legend Steve Cram hailed the event a huge success and said his belief that the city would make a fantastic location for the race had “proved to be the case”.

Mike Tomlinson described the day as “absolutely fantastic”. “It beat every single expectation we had,” he said.

We’ll race again next year

Speaking after the event, Mike Tomlinson said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day. It beat every single expectation we had.

“I was there at the finishing line watching everyone cross; I think it was important to be there as obviously it was an emotional day for thousands of people, and it was just great to see so many smiling faces as they finished the race.

“We hope, and anticipate that we have raised thousands of pounds for charity.

“Since we launched the race, the support and interest has been fantastic, so much so, we have already begun planning next year’s event – which will take place on August 1 –and we just hope it will meet the amazing standard we have set for this year’s first York Race For All event.

“Hopefully this event will take place annually for many years to come.

“It was great to see 5,000 people on the streets of York and hopefully next year even more people will take part.

“Obviously we want to give a big thank you to everyone who took part and supported the race.”

Myself and family did this run yesterday and agree it was a huge success. York has needed something like this for a long time. We have the perfect running course, the Knavesmire and the river. We regularly go running all over Yorkshire on a Sunday morning and some of the runs are not at all picturesque or they are all hilly and on rough terrain. It seemed to have caused mimimum disruption(?) to travellers as it was early on Sunday morning. It was a brilliant route, it was well organised..there was plenty of parking....it was sunny!!! and it was fun.
Well done, will defo do it again next year.

Couldn’t agree more. I thoroughly enjoyed taking part and sincerely hope this event will become a permanent fixture in York. Hopefully the residents on the route weren’t inconvenienced too much (the only ones I saw were clapping and cheering). I’m sure the event will have raised £100,000’s for charity. Time to go and pre-register for next year...

Well done to everyone. I am pleased it was a success and I hope it raised lots of money for charity and that it does become a permenant event. But why did the loud speakers have to be at full volume? there has just been 2 concerts which I didn't even hear from my house, but the speakers on Sunday morning woke me up at 9am. If I played my stereo that loud at that time on a Sunday morning the police would have been round within a few minutes. I don't want to detract from the event, but there has to be a compromise

It was a great event, but whoever gave the microphone to that girl needs sacking, I cringed when she started singing to the music!

Gutted i couldnt run it this year (broken foot) but enjoyed cheering on my missus and me mum. And will line up with them next year!

Well done to all who took part! And well done to all the volunteers who helped things run smoothly.

It was an absolutely BRILLIANT event even though this year I was coatholding and cheering my family on. It was a fantastic atomosphere and a great day seemed to be had by all. I can't WAIT to run it next year. Well done to Mike tromlinson for beginning a hopefully long lasting, much waited for event in York.

invisibleman - you must live near me - I wondered what all the noise was until I remembered the event was on - that voice could shatter glass! Great event though, great to see such support and a fabulous atmosphere. Well done to everyone for taking part.

Good to see the people of York coming out and having fun. Yes - turn the volume down and keep the Blue Peter presenter on steroids off the mic.

I took part yesterday and enjoyed this event! As for those residents who thought the loud speakers were too loud, you must live on the same level as the start line as half way down Knavesmire Road I couldn't hear a thing! I only knew we were warming up because I saw some arms waving around ahead of me! It didn't matter though, I had a great time anyway!

Thank you York and the people of this great city for hosting such a landmark event! Congratulations.

the day and the weather were great. the course was excellent, however, it was let down by just a couple of things that would have made the experience even more worthwhile.
the queues in and out of York could have been managed better (like on Race day?) The start could have been better managed - normally you have some waves so that the "runners" can run and then the walkers can start from the back and do not hinder.
It was a really good course and took in a lot of York's beauty and was a real pleasure to walk/jog around!
I did enjoy the experience overall! Well done.

Hang on a mo...didn't Jane pedal across the USA as well? We should have a bike ride ahead of the runners, on the same morning.

Was a great event which I thoroughly enjoyed, Our family had 7 taking part including our Grandma who is in her 70's.

Would imagine we will all be back next year armed with a super size picnic cause we were starving all day.

Count me in for a bike ride Paul.

Three hearty cheers to all concerned, without exception, in making York 10K a great success - without the blatant sex dicsrimination against males and the mass exploitation of the 'willing females' who participated in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life (female only events)throughou the UK.
