A DOCTOR who left a woman motorist with “lifechanging injuries” after falling asleep at the wheel can carry on working without restrictions, a panel has ruled.
Dr Rajasekar Ramachandran, 43, smashed head-on into a woman’s car while driving home after working a night shift as a trainee anaesthetist at York Hospital.
His Volkswagen Passat was seen driving erratically before it swerved across the road and into the path of a BMW sports car carrying the woman and her friend.
The woman, known only as Miss A, was cut from the vehicle by firefighters and airlifted to hospital.
She suffered injuries to her hands, left hip, lower legs and ankles, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service heard. Dr Ramachandran admitted dangerous driving at Hull Crown Court last June.
He was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for a year, ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and was banned from driving for 18 months.
A professional disciplinary tribunal ruled his fitness to practise was “impaired” by his conviction, but decided not to impose any sanction on his registration.
